My living amends to my mother is to be fully present in my life so I can be fully present in hers. My Mom, on the other hand, loves to complain about Ricky’s behavior. Sometimes I can listen supportively for a short period of time. Over the years, in small bits and pieces, I have been able to share small pearls of my Al-anon wisdom.
Practice accepting other’s responses to your efforts and remember that you have done all you can. When appropriate, remind others that you are here if they change their mind or wish to talk. If you damaged someone’s property while under the influence of alcohol, meet with the person face-to-face and offer to repair the damage or reimburse them for repairs already completed. When choosing to make amends, exercise careful consideration of yourself and others to ensure you avoid causing further harm in your recovery efforts. Before you decide who to approach and how you intend to make amends, reflect on your efforts at recovery and the intent behind making amends.
Judaism has a yearly practice of accountability and apology to those whom you have harmed with your actions. After years of being bossy and overbearing, my basic apologies meant little. They don’t always see my hands off approach as sincere kindness, but my motives are pure.
You have to put in the work to repair the damage and heal those relationships. To make amends, you must do more than just make apologies for your past behavior. Instead, making amends means you apologize for what you’ve done and make it right. Similarly, making living amends means you completely change the way you live and remain committed to that lifestyle. If you don’t think your apology will be welcome, it won’t be helpful to the person or to you. When you’re working towards amends, it’s important to ask the other person what specific things you could do to help them heal.
People who have made reckless decisions due to addiction cannot simply un-do the pain and often irreversible heartache that they have caused by issuing a simple apology. In most cases, the victim of the abuse, neglect, or crime will need a much more prolific and profound interaction with you before any attempt at reconciliation can be made. When I first came to recovery, I was certain steps 8 and 9 would be a breeze.
Steps 8 and 9 help us to move out of the shame we have lived in, shame that feeds the cycle of substance use and addiction. We strengthen and reinforce healthy recovery whenever we do our part to repair relationships or reach out to others with support and understanding. The origin of living amends in modern use relates to addiction recovery and substance abuse treatment.
It does not restrict the original five nuclear states — the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain. Israel, Pakistan and India, which also have nuclear weapons, have never signed. The spirit of the treaty — that even the original five nuclear states would make progress toward disarmament — has not been achieved. The New START is the only nuclear weapons deal between the United States and Russia. Although Mr. Putin announced last February that Russia was suspending its participation, Russia has thus far stuck to the treaty limits. Intended to institute verifiable limits on deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles, it caps the number of nuclear warheads on each side at 1,550.
Early in my recovery, I learned neither my son nor my husband was listening to anything I said. This year, I spent thousands of hours and thousands of dollars keeping The Marginalian going. For sixteen years, it has remained free and ad-free and alive thanks to patronage from readers. I have no staff, no interns, not even an assistant — a thoroughly one-woman labor of love that is also my life and my livelihood. If this labor has made your own life more livable in the past year , please consider aiding its sustenance with a one-time or loyal donation. Willingness to eliminate certain activities (at least until you’ve established solid sobriety) such as traveling for business, spending time with certain friends, unfettered use of the internet, etc.
When women experience betrayal, emotional abuse, and sexual coercion at the hands of their partner, they experience significant betrayal trauma that can impact their lives in devastating ways. Betrayal Trauma Recovery advocates for the safety of women and children. By interviewing three abusive men who recognize their abuse what is a living amends and want to change, BTR hopes to offer insight and information that will help women get to safety, not try to rescue their abusers. Less than 10% of addiction treatment facilities in the U.S. reported accreditation by CARF and The Joint Commission in SAMHSA’s 2016 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services.
